Model Railroaders and Their Layouts

Model Railroaders and Their Layouts

I have been reading about layouts the last few weeks.  I have noticed that many railroaders spend much of their free time working on their layout either to continue creating or adding to it.  Sometimes it is to remake the layout into a different arrangement.

There is a great difference between railroaders of yesteryear and railroaders of today.

The emphasis on the model railroad layout has changed over time.  The way that a railroader will develop and create a layout has changed as well.

There was a time when the development and construction of the layout was the main emphasis.  When model railroading first came into being almost everything the model railroaders needed would be made from scratch.  This included buildings, landscape, trees, roads etc.   These things were designed, created, and built from materials that the model railroader had access to.  They would then put on the finishing details and paint them just like the real ones they had seen.  There was just as much detail put into creating, developing, building and maintaining these layouts as there was put into running the different train sets.

Today what a model railroader does is totally different. A model railroader will still have to design and develop their layout.  They do not have to build the buildings if they do not want to.   They do not have to create the trees, roads etc. either.  Instead they can buy them from hobby stores. Even the laying of the track has changed.  All that a model railroader has to do is buy E-Z track, lay it down and behold their track is done.  These pre-built items have definitely created a new mind set about model railroading these days.

The reason for having a model railroad layout has changed.  At one time it was to have a lasting hobby.  The emphasis was on the designing, creating, building and developing of a layout.  Now the emphasis is on getting the model railroad layout set up and ready to go.  The highlight is on the running and playing with the train set(s) not on the layout.

This has come about because we have less time to devote to our hobby.  Our parents and grandparents had more time to design, create, develop and build a model railroad layout than we do today.

Does this mean that model railroaders from yesteryear had more fun than
model railroaders of today?  I do not know.  I do know that both railroading clubs and families have had a lot of fun with model railroading over the years.  The way it is accomplished has just changed with the times.
